The White House meeting between Kosovo and Serbia should be cancelled after the indictment against President Hashim Thaci, former US Department of Defense official Michael Carpenter has argued.
Carpenter was in charge of the Balkans, and now chairs the Managing Director of Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement.
“I expect the summit to be canceled but nothing is predictable with the Trump administration. I can’t say for sure how they will react, but in these circumstances, that’s how they should react,” Carpenter said in an interview for RFE/REL.
He added that accusations against Thaçi and Veseli are very serious and they will influence the dialogue with Serbia.
The President aborted his trip and is on his way back to Kosovo, his office stated.
President Trump’s Envoy Richard Grenell shared the news that Thaçi will not attend the White House meeting on July 27.
