Former Prime Minister of Kosovo and the leader of Vetevendosje Movement, Albin Kurti and the Acting President Vjosa Osmani, will run in a joint list in the snap parliamentary elections set to be held on February 14.
“Today, when we are one month away from the elections, we are happy to announce that we will run together on the same list,” Kurti told media during a joint press conference with Osmani on Thursday.
After signing an agreement of political principles and goals, Kurti said that it was for “a state with justice and without corruption, for a society with health and education”.
He announced that on Saturday, they will submit the list of candidates at the Central Election Commission.
While the Acting President and speaker of Parliament, Vjosa Osmani said that the initiative she leads could not be registered because of procedural issues, but added that they “have enough representatives in this list to achieve a plebiscite victory on February 14”.
“We are determined to fight organized crime and corruption. We are determined to defend the country’s Constitution. We are determined for a Kosovo where everyone can ensure a dignified life. Kosovo needs a Prime Minister who will not turn a blind eye to injustice,” Osmani said.
While referring to Osmani as “the President”, Kurti said that there is a lot of work ahead but also “a great victory”.
“We have the president, she has performed her duty with responsibility and dignity, she has expressed the integrity of the institution and the unity of the people. In these elections, which are a referendum, we must legitimize this,” Kurti said.
Osmani was prime ministerial candidate of Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) in 2019. During these elections LDK was placed in the second place, behind Vetevendosje who won.
Vetevendosje and LDK ended up in a governing coalition which ended through a motion of no confidence.
Osmani was a vocal opponent of the decision to oust the governing coalition between her party and Vetevendosje.
In June 2020, Osmani was dismissed as LDK’s deputy leader and member of the party chairmanship.
Earlier this month, during a televised interview with BIRN, Osmani said that her “aim was not to build a political party but a citizens’ initiative, which will put Kosovo citizens at the center”.
