Kosovo’s Healthcare System Overwhelmed by Coronavirus

More than 80% of available beds in Kosovo’s regional hospitals are currently occupied, leaving less than 20% of them free for coronavirus patients that may need hospitalization in the upcoming weeks.

Following a meeting with experts, Kosovo’s Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti has sounded the alarm that there currently remain only 130 free hospital beds out of the country-wide total of 700 beds dedicated for coronavirus patients.

Hoti said that the government is trying to expand the medical system’s capacities by transforming facilities that specialized in treating other conditions into coronavirus facilities.

The Prime Minister once again called on citizens to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and maintain personal hygiene, as this is the only way to make infected cases and hospitalizations decrease.

In the last 24 hours, alone, 237 new coronavirus infected cases have been reported in Kosovo. Meanwhile, there are 2995 cases active in the country, mainly concentrated in the capital of Prishtina.
