Kosovo’s outgoing Prime Minister Albin Kurti has asked for the Venice Commission’s opinion on the President’s power to disband the Parliament and to propose a candidate for Prime Minister following the motion of no-confidence that ousted Kurti’s government.
This marks the first time Kosovo has requested an opinion from the Venice Commission regarding their constitutional institutions. The Office of the Prime Minister stated that, under the circumstances the country finds itself in, the Commission’s opinion would be useful in strengthening democracy and constitutional law.
On May 1, Kosovo’s Constitutional Court suspended Saturday’s parliamentary vote on a new government in Kosovo, until May 29, when it is expected to rule on whether President Thaçi’s decree granting Kosovo’s second-largest party, LDK, the right to form a new government, is in line with the Constitution or not.
