Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci and former Speaker of Parliament, and head of Kosovo’s Democratic Party (PDK), Kadri Veseli have been indicted by Kosovo Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor’s Office for crimes against humanity and war crimes.
The charges that will be brought against them include murder, enforced disappearance of persons, persecution, and torture against hundreds of known victims consisting of Kosovo Albanians, Serbs, Roma people, and other ethniticies. The victims include political opponents.
Thaci, Veseli, and other charged suspects are allegedly responsible for nearly 100 murders.
A press statement released by the Prosecutor’s Office on June 24 asserts the Prosecutors determination that it can prove these charges beyond reasonable doubt.
The Prosecutor claims that a public statement was necessary because Thaci and Veseli’s attempts to undermine and obstruct the work of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, “in an attempt to ensure that they do not face justice.”
The news comes only three days before Kosovo and Serbian representatives are set to meet in Washington to resume dialogue.
