US Ambassador Donald Lu called the liberation of Lulzim Berisha, the head of the band of Durrës, as an unacceptable act of corrupted courts. During a conference on the International Day against Corruption Lu declared:
The liberation of Lulzim Berisha has happened for unknown reasons. I would like to say to the corrupted courts that this decision is unacceptable. We should be scandalized.
Berisha was convicted by the Appeals Court to 25 years imprisonment, but only sat out 12 years of his punishment.
On December 5, the Court of First Instance liberated him from prison with the argument that he “suffers from a serious disease and his life is at risk if he stayed in jail.”
