The Macedonian government has once again called for the decoupling of their EU accession bid from that of Albania.
Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov told Euronews yesterday that splitting the two countries’ membership processes could be a solution for North Macedonia’s progress toward the EU.
“I think a success of one is a good news for the whole region. As neighbors and good neighbors we believe that Tirana should also be able to start its European journey. So I think that 2 out of 2 is best, we need to all work towards finding a common denominator. But if this is not possible, then we need a positive dynamic, not a negative dynamic. And one is definitely better and more than none,” Dimitrov stated.
Last October, the European leaders failed to reach an agreement on opening accession talks with Albanian and north Macedonia. French President Emmanuel Macron insisted that the EU needs to reform before further enlargement.
Whilst they all agreed that North Macedonia had met the necessary conditions, several countries were against Albania’s advancement in the EU path.
Before the October meeting of European leaders, the Macedonian president had also asked for decupling from Albania, only to be criticized by the Albanian prime minister.
The European Council will discuss the EU enlargement before May 2020.
