Macron Hopes Kosovo’s New Government Continues the Dialogue with Serbia

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron sent a letter to the newly elected Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti,  pointing out the importance of a final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia.

“Resolving the agreement between Kosovo and Serbia is a major challenge that you have to face,” Macron wrote, adding that there has been “significant progress” in the dialogue that Kosovo conducted with Belgrade, facilitated by the European Union.

“I hope that you continue this dialogue in order to reach a comprehensive, final, and legally binding agreement which is one of the conditions for the European rapprochement of Kosovo, as well as Serbia,” Macron wrote.

French President assured Kurti of his full support on the issue.

He also added that would be happy to welcome Kurti to Paris soon, to discuss more the topic.

Kurti has stated that dialogue with Serbia is not the Kosovo people’s top priority, and won’t be his government’s either.

“I know that you intend to carry out fundamental reforms for your citizens; strengthening the rule of law, economic development […] fight against pandemic which is an immediate priority […],” Macron wrote, pointing out that the readiness of France to support Kosovo’s government in all these priorities.

Albin Kurti’s Vetevendosje Movement won the parliamentary elections held on February 14 with 50.28%.
