EUR 13,690 of undeclared cash was discovered by Maltese customs officials, the Anti Money Laundering team, and a K9 Unit on a repatriation flight to Albania.
The sum was found on a passenger who was attempting to board the flight. Two police dogs indicated something suspicious and the individual was apprehended.
According to EU and Maltese law, passengers must declare any amount of cash over EUR 10,000 to customs upon arriving, departing, or transiting through Malta.
Maltese authorities have not confirmed the nationality of the individual, but due to the nature of the flight, it is believed that they were Albanian.
