Today at 18:00 former LSI party leader and Speaker of Parliament Ilir Meta will be sworn in as President of the Republic of Albania. At 18:00 the swearing in will take place at the presidential palace on the Boulevard of the Martyrs in Tirana.
Ilir Meta will take over the function from Bujar Nishani, a former Minister of Interior Affairs under the Berisha government. The mandate of the president is five years.
Meta didn’t plan to become president, a function that was offered to him by Prime Minister Edi Rama after three rounds of presidential elections in a Parliament boycotted by the PD failed to produce any candidates. Although he stepped down from his role as LSI leader, he was very present during the electoral campaign.
Recently the LSI leadership was taken over by Meta’s wife Monika Kryemadhi, who, however, will not attend the ceremony. Meta will be accompanied by his daughter.
