Albania’s Minister of Interior Sandër Lleshaj admitted to have met with opposition leader Lulzim Basha’s bodyguard from the Republican Guard, but denied having any information about death threats against Basha.
“I have no information whatsoever that Basha has been threatened. I had meetings with bodyguards [assigned] from the [Republican] Guard, this is my daily work: meeting with bodyguards from the [Republican] Guard, and asking them on the proceedings of my work,” Lleshaj stated today.
Yesterday, opposition’s Democratic Party (PD) denounced the informal meeting between Minister Lleshaj and Basha’s bodyguard Feim Dollapaj.
In a letter sent to Minister Lleshaj, the opposition party demanded him to immediately inform the PD on the motives leading him to discuss the issue in an informal way and by bypassing the law.
Bardhi also called on Minister Lleshaj “to officially inform on the seriousness and reliability of this information,” otherwise the PD would consider this an attempt for “political blackmail, and [Leshaj] will be held responsible for the action.”
Yesterday, President Ilir Meta called an urgent meeting with the head of the Albanian Intelligence Agency (SHISH) and the Commander of the Republican Guard to discuss the reliability of death threats against Basha claimed by Minister Lleshaj.
