More Protests in Albania as Workers Demand COVID-19 Financial Aid

Employees of a clothing factory in Berat are protesting today as they claim they haven’t received any financial assistance from the government.

Gathering in front of the Tax Directorate, they demanded to receive the “war salary” that has been rolled out by the government as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The workers claim that their place of work has been closed for months yet they have not received any money. They added that their names appear on the system as beneficiaries.

Yesterday, 50 public transport workers protested in front of the Vlora Tax Directorate. They said they have been out of work for almost three months but have not received any of the “war salary”. The company that employs them closed on 13 March as per the Ministry of Health orders but no provisions have been made to provide them with financial help.

“The order came out on 20 March but we were fired on 13 March so they don’t give us money. We have three months without work and without food,” they told reporters.

Some 55% of those intended to receive the war salary have benefited, according to Monitor.al. Reasons for people not receiving the income are mainly due to the deadlines on when the individuals’ employment was terminated.
