Merchants and other citizens from Albania and Kosova led a protest yesterday in Morina objecting to the government-mandated Milot–Morina highway tolls.
Merchants claim €11.20–€22.50 per trip highway tolls for buses and trucks, respectively, will greatly increase their costs, leading, ultimately, to higher priced products.
150 empty trucks paraded on the Milot–Morina segment in protest, implying the fact that merchants from Kosova will no longer bring produce to Albania.
Merchants, mainly engaged in the trade of iron, salt, and various other products, stated that by instituting this toll, the government is building a barrier between the two countries, as opposed to bridge, which was what the Rruga e Kombit highway was meant to be.
The Rama government decided to institute a toll for the Milot–Morina segment a few days ago, in accordance to the contract it has with the concessionary company responsible for the road maintenance.
