The Director of Albania’s Infectious Diseases Control Department, Silva Bino, said in an interview with VOA on Friday that the majority of the new cases of COVID-19 confirmed as the Delta variant were among unvaccinated people.
“Only 2-3 percent are cases that have been vaccinated with two doses, and only 10 percent with one dose. This clearly shows that we have an epidemic among the unvaccinated and that vaccines are effective in real life in Albania,” Bino said.
She also said that the government should consider making vaccines mandatory in order to increase the vaccination rate in the country.
Bino appealed to both citizens and authorities to implement the measures, as well as to get vaccinated. Throughout August, anyone over the age of 18 can get a vaccine upon presentation of ID and residence permit in the case of immigrants.
In the past 24 hours, Albania recorded 1 death and 379 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the number of active cases to 2,091. This is the highest number of daily infections since March 31st.
