Municipality of Tirana Doesn’t Meet Promise on Reconstruction of Earthquake Damaged Homes

Over a year on from the 26 November earthquake and the Municipality of Tirana has built 52 out of 870 planned individual houses.

Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj had previously said that all individual house would be rebuilt within November 2020. But according to data provided to Faktoje, from the Municipality, only 52 are completed.

In addition to this, 1600 families are waiting for the construction of apartments. To date, construction has only just started in one area of Tirana.

Veliaj previously said:

“I am very enthusiastic as we have opened three new construction sites, so we will continue in each neighbourhood, depending on the damaged houses. We will make sure that every construction site is working hard until the last house is completed. The Prime Minister’s message is that before the year has passed from the date of the earthquake, we will have finished all individual houses.

In Tirana, we will build 870 houses then in autumn we will start the apartments which take more time…”

This did not happen.

While 52 have been completed, construction is ongoing on 502 and the rest are still at the paperwork stage.

In terms of apartments, there are 90 that require rebuilding completely. These are home to 1600 families. There are a further 7100 families whose homes are damaged and are beneficiaries of reconstruction funds.
