The sudden death of 71-year-old Polish citizen Andrzej Izdebski, an arms dealer on the UN sanction list, sparked significant interest from local and international media, as well as several conspiracy theories.
In Poland, local media reported that the Polish government said he had died in Tirana and been cremated; therefore, there was no need for further investigations. The problem was, however, that there are no crematoriums in Albania, therefore, cremating him would not be possible.
Despite the reports in Polish media, the cause of death had not yet been established until Thursday. Forensic expert Elton Serani told the media that he died of a cardiac arrest.
The autopsy was carried out on 27 June, a week after he was found dead inside his rented apartment. Police said at the time, they thought it was due to suspicious circumstances.
Izdebski left Poland at the end of 2020 after reports he was involved in a big scandal involving the supply of respirators to Polish hospitals at an overinflated cost, with issues in their paperwork, and issues with not fulfilling the order. He was banned from leaving the country but surfaced in Albania sometime later.
The Pole also had business interests in Albania, including Unimesko, which is involved in arms trades, and Wind Sun Water Initiative, involved in energy.
