ODIHR Will Send 250 International Observers to Monitor Serbian Elections

The international observer mission of the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) will have more than 250 observers at polling stations throughout Serbia for the 3 April elections.

The core team will consist of 16 international experts, seven women and nine men from 14 different OSCE countries.

“The core team is in Belgrade and we will be there for approximately eight weeks. The team will soon be supplemented by 27 long-term observers, 13 women and 14 men from 16 different countries,” Mission Chief Douglas Wake told reporters in Belgrade on Wednesday.

Long-term observers will be assigned to 13 different locations in Serbia, usually in pairs and never from the same country in one pair. Their role is to observe the implementation of the election process at local and regional levels.

“Besides, ODIHR is sending a request to the participating states to secure 250 short-term observers, to systematically observe the carrying out of elections, the opening of polling stations, voting, counting of votes on election day,” Wake stated.
