PACE President to Visit Albania Amid Ongoing Initiatives

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Rik Daems will visit Tirana on 10 and 11 November at the invitation of Albanian Speaker Lindita Nikolla.

According to a press release, Daems will meet with Nikola, President Ilir Meta, Prime Minister Edi Rama, and various ministers. Talks are also scheduled with leaders of the political groups in parliament, the Ombudsman, and the Commissioner for Protection against Discrimination.

It is not known exactly what the theme of the talks will be.

Meanwhile, the CoE has been working locally with the EU on a joint action called “Strengthening the Quality and Efficiency of Justice in Albania”, in cooperation with the High Judicial Council. They have conducted a series of training with district representatives, administrative and appellate courts on implementing new methodologies.

“The regional workshops will provide an opportunity for the national courts to gain a better understanding of their role in the implementation of new methodology for the improvement of the court performance and the justice services delivered to the Albanian citizens, in accordance with European standards” the CoE noted.

The Head of the Council of Europe Office in Tirana Jutta Gutzkow, emphasized the importance of the new regulatory framework and increased capacities of court staff, reaffirming the commitment of the action to support the justice institutions with specific tools and methodology of the CEPEJ adopted to the Albanian context for developing an efficient court system.

The visit also comes after more than 30 submissions to the Venice Commission, the CoE constitutional specialists’ body.
