Parliament to Elect Temporary Prosecutor General, Opposition Protests

The Albanian Parliament meets today at 10:00 to discuss a number of controversial issues, including the law on court tariffs, which was rejected by President Ilir Meta, and the election of the Temporary Prosecutor General.

Last week, the Legal Affairs Commission had refused to discuss President Meta’s refusal and his objection against the disproportionate tariff increase from a fixed tariff of 200 lekë to a variable tariff between 2,000 and 10,000,000 lekë for court appeals. The President argued that the increase was unconstitutional.

Another potentially unconstitutional decision will be made with the election of the Temporary General Prosecutor. The government has based this procedure on a questionable legal opinion prepared by experts of the international legal missions EURALIUS and OPDAT, which supports a clear violation of the dispositions in the Constitution.

Opposition parties PD and LSI have called for a protest in front of Parliament, which has been surrounded by a cordon of police officers.
