Parliament is expected to confirm President Ilir Meta’s decree to dismiss Fatmir Xhafaj from his office as Minister of Interior. The parliamentary group of the Socialist Party alone is expected to vote on the decree, as the opposition has vowed to stay out of Parliament until all criminal elements have been removed.
In recent weeks, several PS politicians, including Durrës mayor Vangjush Dako and PS parliamentary group leader Taulant Balla, have been linked to the arrests of criminal groups in recent weeks. Former PS deputies Arben Ndoka and Arben Çuko were arrested as part of a criminal organization.
Meanwhile, Sandër Lleshi will take up a post as Deputy Minister of Interior Affairs after President Ilir Meta refused to decree him in his post. The reasons for his refusal, as for Xhafaj’s dismissal, remain matter of intense speculation in the Albanian media.
On Twitter, Prime Minister Edi Rama confirmed that “Sandër Lleshi will take over the leadership of the Ministry of Interior as Deputy Minister.”
