Police Chief Arrested on Suspicion of Rape Released for Lack of Evidence

Fushe Arrez Police Station Chief Izmir Duraku, who was arrested on suspicions of raping a minor in 2015, was released the next day for lack of evidence.

Duraku was detained on Friday, June 5, following an investigation by the Ministry of Interior department that oversees complaints against police. The investigation was launched after a young woman denounced Duraku, alleging that she had been raped by him at the Fushe Arrez police station when she went there in 2015 to report a previous rape against her.

The investigation found that based on the evidence gathered, there are strong suspicions that in April 2015, a girl was sexually harassed” by Duraku at the police station.

However, on Saturday, prosecutors said Duraku’s arrest was illegal and ordered his release for lack of evidence.

The event is reported to have happened in 2015. The woman had gone to Shkodra Police Station to report multiple rapes committed against her by employees of the orphanage in the city.
