On Sunday, a driver mowed down a young couple and their three-month-old baby at a crossing on Rruga Kavaja in the centre of Tirana.
The parents are being treated in hospital and have been transferred out of intensive care, while the three-month-old baby has been discharged into the care of relatives.
A SUV driven by Ajas Sulejmani hit the family after he failed to stop at a red light. They were attempting to cross the road at the time. Sulejmani stopped the car and fled the scene, prompting a city-wide manhunt.
The driver as finally apprehended by the police who have imposed an administrative measure of EUR 830 and have banned him from driving for two years.
He is expected to appear before court in the upcoming weeks as the police found he had been driving under the influence, for which he risks 5-10 years in prison.
It has been reported that Sulejmani had eight previous offenses for driving including speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, and ignoring red lights.
