Albanian President Ilir Meta commemorated the January 9, 2004 tragedy, when 28 Albanians drowned in the Ionian Sea.
Via a Facebook post, Meta expressed his condolences to the victims’ families. “Let us do everything to not allow similar tragedies to happen again by creating every opportunity that people, especially young people, are able to build a secure future in their Fatherland,” he concluded.
On January 9, 2004, 28 people drowned in the Ionian Sea, due to weather conditions. They were trying to covertly reach Italy, but their boat was unable to withstand the storm.
Eighteen men and three women were confirmed dead, whereas seven others remain missing.
