President Ilir Meta has asked the government to assign the Vjosa river national park status, in order to rescue it from natural resource exploitation.
He commended the refusal of an environmental permit for the Kalivaç hydropower project, calling it the first battle won in a war that must continue.
The president encouraged continued protection of the area in parts that do not yet enjoy a special protection status, such as the Qesarat-Poçem area that is threatened by dam construction.
The President spoke during the International Forum for Stable Economic Development of the Vjosa River.
