President Ilir Meta has refused to decree the new Minister of Interior Affairs, General Sandër Lleshi. Lleshi was nominated by Prime Minister Edi Rama after the former Minister of Interior Fatmir Xhafaj left his office for reasons that continue to remain unclear. No official statement regarding Xhafaj’s resignation have been made public by the government. Xhafaj himself has refused any public interview.
After a meeting today between Prime Minister Rama and President Meta, former coalition partners until the Meta’s former party LSI joined the opposition during the 2017 elections, the Presidency released the following statement:
The President of the Republic, H.E. Ilir Meta has not been fully convinced to give his trust to the candidacy of Sandër Lleshi as Minister of Interior.
