Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has established a Security Fund to raise money for the Kosovo Army and called on citizens to contribute to it.
On Tuesday, March 1, Kurti released a statement on Facebook where he announced the creation of the fund.
“In accordance with the needs of the Kosovo Security Forces, the current situation and after consultations with international partners, I have authorized today the Ministry of Finance to establish a ‘Security Fund’,” Kurti wrote.
He also called on diaspora and Kosovo residents, but also other parties to donate to the fund in order “to contribute to national security.”
Kurti has previously expressed his intent to increase Kosovo’s defense spending in order to bring it to 2% of the country’s GDP, as required by NATO of its members.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has raised security concerns for the country, whose territory and independence is under threat by Serbia.
Last week, Kosovo Minister of Defense Armend Mehaj asked for accelerated membership into NATO and a permanent US military base in its territory after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
