Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the Albanian Football Federation (FSHF) nearly a month ahead of elections for its president, according to local media.
A month ago, the Albanian police had filed a report with the prosecution office on suspicions of abuse within the institution.
The news on the launch of investigations follows corruption allegations by Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj on FSHF President Armando Duka last week. Veliaj warned he would ask for national and international investigations against Duka.
Duka has been the head of the association since 2002. His presidency has often been accused of corruption and lack of transparency by sportsmen and politicians throughout the last 20 years.
The current president is set to rerun for reelection against sports commentator Dritan Shakohoxha on March 2, 2022.
Aiming at Duka, in a social media post on Monday following the launch of the investigation, Veliaj called for “the sludge to be taken away from football”.
