Public Commissioner Request Dismissal of Judge Who Exonerated Albania’s Former Minister of Interior

On Friday, the Public Commissioner appealed the confirmation of Special Court Judge Irena Gjoka to the Special Appeals Chamber, requesting her dismissal.

The Public Commissioner argued that the vetting commission (KPK) did not conduct an in-depth investigation into all three evaluation criteria: wealth, background and professionalism.

The vetting commission confirmed Judge Gjoka in February this year.

Irena Gjoka is one of the three judges of the panel that ruled in the case of Albania’s former Minister of Interior Saimir Tahiri.

In September 2019, Judge Gjoka, along with Judge Ardit Mustafaj and Judge Flora Hajredinaj, dropped drug trafficking charges against Tahiri, and sentenced him to 5 years in prison for abuse of office.
