Prime Minister Edi Rama has stated that the EU leaders “should start telling the truth” about the Western Balkans integration into the union, whatever their decision might be in the next summit.
“Whatever our European friends decide, it’s good if they start telling the truth and not blame us as usual, at a time when [the delay in EU integration process] comes as a result of their internal discussions.”
Speaking to journalists after an informal meeting between the EU and WB leaders last night, Rama praised the EU member countries agreement on the new methodology for the WB accession path, and firmly stated that Albania already deserved the opening of talks despite EU’s internal problems.
“The EC assessment has been positive and will be positive. It cannot be otherwise. Albania has been doing and is still doing its homework […] Our European friends’ decision is not simply related to what we do, but it is above all, and recently almost completely related to what they have to sort out among themselves regarding the future of the EU and enlargement process.”
Asked about how his controversial “anti-crime” campaign (read here, here, and here), that was started a few weeks before the European Commission report, might be reflect in the March report, Rama said he expects the Commission to positively assess the initiative:
“The European Commission [‘s assessment] will be positive because Albania has done its homework. I expect that our latest initiative takes its deserved place in the EC’s assessment of Albania,” Rama said.
