Safet Rustemi, who was on the Federal Police’s most wanted list last year, has been arrested in the Albanian capital Tirana.
Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad reported on the story on Saturday, quoting judicial sources. Mr Rustemi should be serving a 22-year prison sentence in Belgium, but the Foreigner’s Office still deported him.
Authorities consider Safet Rustemi one of the most dangerous criminals in Europe. His family were behind several assassinations in Albania. While in Belgium, Rustemi tried to take control of prostitution rings in Brussels using violence.
He was handed a 9-year prison sentence last year. This year he received two more sentences, to 8 and 5 years. He was deported after being released on conditional parole as he had been living in Belgium illegally.
This information became public last year and caused intense debate between The Foreigner’ Office and the Justice SPF.
