Serbian President Vows to Fight Media ‘Lies’ about His Son’s Connection to Alleged Criminals

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has pledged to “fight the lies” spread by journalists about his son’s connection to alleged members of a drug trafficking clan.

The President’s reaction came after Serbian media KRIK published photos of his son, Danilo Vučić’s, in the company of alleged organized crime figures.

“My son Danilo is an honest and decent young man. He is guilty only because he is my son,” Vučić wrote on Instagram, next to a photo of him and his son.

“Before them [KRIK], the irresponsible and rude ones, no one has ever drawn a target on the children of politicians. By attacking my child, they pushed me into a corner from which I have nowhere else to go. I will fight with all my strength and defeat all their lies. I promise them that!” Vučić added.

Danilo Vučić was seen in a Belgrade café watching a soccer game together with several people, including Aleksandar Vidojević, who is registered in Serbia’s police files as a member of Kavači clan, one of two Montenegrin mafia groups.

The Vučić – Vidojević connection was mentioned before in an OCCRP/KRIK/MANS  investigation. Back then, Serbian officials accused journalists of targeting the president’s son on behalf of the Serbian opposition. Their reactions were met by a Council of Europe warning that KRIK was “facing a public smear campaign from the Serbian state.”
