State Police Director Çako Fires All Police Chiefs in Elbasan

General Director of the State Police Hako Çako has today dismissed the entire police leadership of Elbasan county for their incompetence regarding the events of September 18, when the car of one of the gang leaders in Elbasan crashed into a police car, after which the police officers made no effort to arrest the offender.

During a hastily convened press conference in which he announced the dismissal of 12 police chiefs, Çako declared:

The management and operational structure in the local police directorate in Elbasan have shown themselves to be incapable of managing the situation created on September 18, 2017. With their actions and even worse their non-actions, the situation has escalated and the persons responsible for the serious event have not been arrested and put before justice within time.

Çako has nominated Altin Qato as the new police chief in Elbasan County. Qato previously held the post of General Director of Public Security.

More dismissals are expected in other counties.

During his statement, Çako failed to take any personal responsibility, despite the escalation of crime in the country the last months, involving multiple altercations between different criminal groups. In all cases, the police failed to arrest any of the offenders, raising important question marks about not only the police management in the different counties, but also the General Directorate of the State Police led by Çako.
