Turkey backs Serbia’s EU path

Turkey supports Serbia’s European integration process, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in Belgrade on Thursday, adding that Serbia is an important actor in preserving stability in the region.

At a joint news conference after meeting with his Serbian counterpart Nikola Selaković, Cavusoglu thanked Serbia for supporting Turkish investors and added that economic relations and trade between Serbia and Turkey were rapidly developing.

Cavusoglu also said that Turkey believed stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider Balkans was very important and that Turkey was ready to hold a trilateral summit with Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He said that a visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan this year was also being considered.

Before Selaković’s and Cavusoglu’s joint news conference, Culture and Information Minister Maja Gojković and Cavusoglu signed an agreement on cooperation in preventing the smuggling of cultural treasures.

At a meeting with Prime Minister Ana Brnabić, Cavusoglu said that Turkish companies were happy with their businesses in Serbia and employed around 10,000 Serbian workers.

The Turkish minister also met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. Serbian president’s press office quoted Vučić as saying that the two countries “have common economic interests and that it’s important that Turkey with big investments helps the development of less developed regions in Serbia.”
