Albanian police arrested one person, are searching for a second, and charged a third with financial fraud related to cryptocurrency.
They are suspected of operating an illegal cryptocurrency trading platform and are charged with misuse of computers, tax evasion, and electricity theft.
Albania has regulated the cryptocurrency market and operators need to be licensed by the government, which keeps a register of all operators and monitors all transactions. However, the legal framework is still incomplete, and licensing has not yet become effective. Thus, all current cryptocurrency activity is illegal.
A month ago, during a murder investigation, police discovered another illegal Bitcoin trading platform, and 3 persons are under investigation for financial fraud amounting to more than €1 million.
