The US Congress has signed a bipartisan resolution in support of the Iranian opposition and condemning the Iranian state’s terrorist acts.
The resolution asks US embassies to work alongside European and Balkans countries, especially Albania, in order to shut down Iranian diplomatic missions.
On January 21, 2020, the Albanian government suddenly shut down the private school “Saadi” in Tirana, without giving any specific explanation.
Previously, on January 15, 2020, the government announced that it had expelled two Iranian diplomats. According to the government, their activity did not comply with their diplomatic status and principles of the Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations.
In December 2018, the government expelled Iranian ambassador Gholamhossein Mohammadnia and secretary Mostafa Roudaki. At the time, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said the move was made under pressure from Israel and the United States.
Around 3,000 members of the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (Mojahedin-e Khalq – MEK), a political-militant organization working to topple the Iranian regime, are currently sheltered in a compound in Albania after an agreement between the Albanian and US governments. A few months ago, Prime Minister Edi Rama admitted that sheltering the group in Albania posed a certain danger. His statement followed Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s implied threat against Albania for conspiring with the US against the Iranian regime.
