US Embassy in Kosovo Calls for Protection of Victims of Violence

The data of Kosovo’s Ministry of Justice shows that during the coronavirus pandemic, cases of gender- based violence have increased by 17 percent.

This was written by the Embassy of the United States of America in Kosovo on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

“During the COVID 19 pandemic, the Ministry of Justice has seen a 17 percent increase in reported cases of gender-based violence in Kosovo, with even more alarming rises in urban areas. Every woman, every girl, every person, deserves a life free from violence,” reads a tweet of the US embassy.

The US Embassy called on the government and civil society to take action to protect victims of violence.

“Today, on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we call on our partners in government, the private sector, and civil society to take immediate action to protect the vulnerable and fully investigate and prosecute all incidents of gender-based violence,” the wrote.

Radio Free Europe reported that according Kosovo Police, since the beginning of this year until August, over 1,338 cases of violence against women have been reported, of which four cases had a fatal ending.
