The vaccination of doctors and nurses against COVID-19 started in Berat yesterday.
Prime Minister Edi Rama and Health Minister Ogerta Manastirliu were in attendance. Manastirliu said the total number of vaccines that have been given so far in Albania is 10,000. She added that the vaccination of medical staff has been completed in Shkodra and will end this week in Kukes.
The process is ongoing in Vlora and will continue in Berat and Korca this week.
The Minister added that the number of nurses trained to give the vaccine is 1100 but will be increased by 500.
Rama said that by the spring, it’s hoped that the vaccination of the general population will start. He also announced yesterday that the country will soon have a ‘new supply of vaccines’. These will apparently be supplied by another “friendly country”, totalling three such countries that have helped Albania thus far, according to Rama.
He also announced that flights between Albania and the UK could start again soon having been suspended due to the new COVID-19 variation found in England.
During a meeting with the residents of Berat, Rama said that he intends to vaccinate the entire population within 14 months and that vaccination will bring relief in the summer season.
” It could happen that flights with Great Britain will open very soon… Here I introduce the ambition that when we enter the summer season, we could have relief from risk,” he said.
