Vetting Process Suspended for Appeals Judge Alaudin Malaj Following Resignation

The Independent Qualification Commission suspended the vetting process for Tirana Appeals Judge Alaudin Malaj after he resigned. The decision was made on Tuesday by the trial panel composed of Etleda Çiftja, Roland Ilia and Suela Zhegu.

In July, Malaj resigned from the post of Appellate Judge. In December 2019, he indicated in an interview with Top Channel that he had asked the Albanian institutions for protection for himself and his family.

The Appellate Judge said that in a letter sent to 11 institutions he requested physical protection “due to unusual circumstances”.

Alaudin Malaj is the judge who made public the sentencing decision of Geron Xhafaj, the brother of the former Minister of Interior.

Also, Malaj was one of the 5 members of the trial panel who acquitted all members of the “Revenge for Justice” organization. Even in 2017, the High Council of Justice started the investigation against 5 judges of the Serious Crimes Appeal, at the request of former President Bujar Nishani.
