Kosovo’s parliament speaker, Vjosa Osmani will take the office of the President following the resignation of Hashim Thaci after the war crimes indictment against him was confirmed on Thursday.
This is based on Article 90 of Kosovo’s Constitution on Temporary Absence of the President.
“If the President of the Republic of Kosovo is temporarily unable to fulfil her/his responsibilities, he/she may voluntarily transfer the duties of the position to the President of the Assembly who shall then serve as Acting President of the Republic of Kosovo,” the Constitution says.
It also specifies that the position of Acting President of the Republic of Kosovo “may not be exercised for a period longer than six (6) months”.
Kosovo’s President, Hashim Thaci resigned on Thursday after he was notified that the war crimes indictment against him was confirmed by The Hague- based Specialist Chambers of Kosovo.
