Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has stated that Serbia should refrain from comments regarding indictments for crimes against humanity against Kosovo leaders as a measure to protect Serbs in Kosovo.
“The most important thing for us is to be restrained. We know that terrible crimes have taken place. It is good that there is justice for them, but with restraining from other comments, we are protecting our people in Kosovo. It is easy for us in Belgrade and difficult for people in Strpce and other places,” Vucic told journalists in Brussels.
During his two-day visit in Brussels, Vucic met with senior EU officials, including the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, and EU Special Envoy for Kosovo-Serbia dialogue Miroslav Lajcak.
Speaking of projects with the EU, Vucic said that “these are things that are of essential importance to us, but talks with Pristina are of key importance so that we can expect that financial aid.”
The officials talked about expectations from the dialogue, and the EU conditions. Vucic added that he is in daily contact with Lajcak, and they expect the dialogue to resume in July.
The Serbian president said he expects his country to join the EU in 2026.
