The World Health Organisation has highlighted 11 countries, including Albania where there is a significant increase in COVID-19 cases that could “push health systems to collapse”.
Other regional countries on the list include BiH, Kosovo, and North Macedonia.
Hans Kluge, Regional Director at the WHO noted there were over 9 million confirmed cases worldwide and over 400,000 reported deaths. The pandemic is accelerating he said, with a record number of new cases reported on Sunday ith 183,020 in just 24 hours.
There have been more than 2.5 million cases in Europe and 30 countries have seen increases in new cumulative cases in the past two weeks. In 11 of these countries, the situation is considered concerning.
Kluge praised Austria, Georgia and North Macedonia for using digital technology to support contact tracing. He noted that similar solutions were in development in Andorra, Finland, Ireland, and Portugal.
