Woman Commits Suicide After Ex-Husband Wins Custody of 12-Year-Old Daughter

A 37-year-old woman has taken her own life after the Court in Saranda ordered that her 12-year-old daughter go to live with her father in Italy.

The woman was an economist and professional working in a local bank. Local residents claim that she had a strong relationship with her daughter and was well-respected locally, bringing the decision of the court into question. The woman had separated from her husband who had then gone to live abroad.

Following the decision of the court to give sole custody to the father, a somewhat unprecedented decision in Albania, her psychological condition worsened considerably.

She then decided to take an overdose. Upon discovery, she was taken to hospital but died on the way.
