Woman Murdered with Kalashnikov in Northern Albania

The first femicide of 2022 has been reported as a 50-year-old man from Vau i Dejes murdered his ex-partner in front of her family members and then shot himself in the mouth.

The suspect and the victim had been arguing over their four-year-old daughter, with the former wanting to spend more time with her and take her to his house. The victim reportedly did not agree.

Following the argument, the suspect shot his former partner with a Kalashnikov and then turned the gun on himself. He fired the gun in his mouth but did not die and is currently being treated in hospital.

Present were the father of the victim who is paralysed and the four-year-old child.

Asides from murders of women and girls, the number of reported cases of domestic violence continue to increase. Meanwhile, the prosecution rate for violence against a woman or girl, remains at around 13%.

Data released at the end of 2021 by the UN found that more than one in three Albanian women say they feel unsafe at home because of the presence of physical violence and almost 80% think the risk of domestic violence has increased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some 29% of women said that they or someone close to them had experienced domestic violence since the pandemic started. This rose to 53% when women were asked if they had ever been assaulted in their home or by a partner.
