German Ambassador to Albania Peter Zingraf spoke in favour of recycling while criticising incineration due to it being very costly.
“Incinerating is a very costly process. All solutions should be weighed well in this context, but I think that waste separation, processing and recycling is the right way”, said Zingraf while visiting Cerrik to inspect a German investment for integrated waste management.
Zingraf also stated that the recycling process meets one of the European Union directives on waste management and other municipalities should consider it.
While many people and organizations are eager to recycle waste in Albania, the government has gone in a different direction.
Waste incineration for energy purposes accounts for only 1.1%, despite the government paying expensive concessions for waste incinerators.
The recycling rate is at its lowest level in three years, dropping to just 18.1%.
