US President Joe Biden has invited Kosovo and Serbia to the first Summit for Democracy, following initial media reports that they were excluded from the guest list of 100 countries.
On Monday, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani announced she will attend the summit at the invitation of President Biden Monday, and present Kosovo’s “excellent example” of progress with freedom and democracy.
Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic had announced earlier that her country had also been invited, slamming critics who accused the autocratic leadership of President Aleksandar Vucic as the reason for Serbia’s initial exclusion.
Earlier this week, Kosovo’s main parties blamed each other for the lack of invitation after Politico published a list of 100 countries who had been invited to the summit that excluded Kosovo.
The first Summit for Democracy organized by President Biden will take place on an online platform on December 9-10, 2021.
Leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector will get together to set an agenda for tackling threats to democracy around the world.
