The Administrative Court of Durrës decided yesterday to suspend the construction work for the Veliera project. The court’s decision came after a lawsuit filed by cultural heritage activists that opposed the construction of the Veliera Square, which has been partially, and illegally planned in the protected archeological zone of the city.
The court’s verdict is based on the discovery of ancient walls during excavation works for the square, allegedly dating back the Byzantine period.
The Veliera Project, which envisions a large concrete sail suspended over the boulevard, has been made with constant opposition from civil society.
