Albania Makes Barely Any Progress on UN Sustainable Development Goals

Albania has made practically no progress on 90% of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Bertelsmann Stiftung has surveyed the 193 UN member states that in 2015 signed an agreement to meet a number of sustainable development goals by 2030.

Among the goals is eradicating poverty, zero hunger, quality education, good health and well-being, and gender equality.

Compared to 2015, Albania has only made progress on 2 of the 17 goals: lowering extreme poverty (the number of inhabitants living with $2 or less per day) and decreasing inequality.

According to the index, Albania also made small improvement in the quality of primary education, gender equality, responsible consumption and several other fields, while progress is completely absent with respect to good health and well-being, economic growth, industrial innovation, peace, and the building of strong institutions including the justice system.

With its current pace of progress, Albania is ranked second last in Europe, before Montenegro and Bosnia and Hercegovina. The Scandinavian countries of Sweden, Denmark, and Finland top the list.
