Albanian Activists Report EU Ambassador to Prosecutor’s Office over Theater Demolition

Members of the Alliance for the Theater have reported the EU Ambassador to Albania, Luigi Soreca, before the Special Prosecutor Against Corruption (SPAK) claiming illegal interference in the Constitutional Court of Albania.

In a statement for the media, Adriana Kalaja accused Soreca of colluding with Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj in order to influence the Constitutional Court’s decision on the demolition of the National Theater.

Kalaja mentioned that the group had lodged a previous complaint against Soreca on June 16, alleging that he had held a secret meeting at the Constitutional Court.

Kalaja’s accusations are unsubstantiated and she has presented no proof for her claims.

The EU Delegation to Albania rejected the group’s claims and threatened to sue them for defamation.

On July 1, the Constitutional Court ruled on three issues concerning the demolition of the Albanian National Theater.

It repealed the law that stipulated that the construction of the new theater building would be carried out through a public-private partnership (PPP). It also repealed the decision of the Council of Ministers that transferred the ownership of the theater building and land from the Ministry of Culture to the Municipality of Tirana.

However, the Court decided not to review the decision of the Municipality of Tirana to demolish the theater building.
