Following the previous spate of forest fires that were extinguished by heavy rain, another fire has been reported in Peqin near Elbasan.
Residents in the area have notified firefighters and after some hours, they were able to extinguish the fire.
At the beginning of August, large fires broke out across large swathes of the country from north to south. Affected areas included Lezhe, Mirdita, Fier, Shkodra and Gjirokaster. Difficult terrain and dry, hot weather made it increasingly difficult to bring them under control. Hundreds of hectares of land were destroyed as were thousands of olive and fruit trees.
State institutions have said they believe almost all of the fires were started on purpose. Some are believed to have been started with the intention of destroying land so developments could be constructed there.
