In violation of the verdict of the Administrative Court, the Municipality of Durrës has continued construction work on the Veliera Square, pouring concrete on top of the zone where several archeological finds had been made.
The surroundings of the Venetian Tower have now been complete covered in concrete, irreversibly destroying the cultural heritage of Durrës.
On February 17, the Administrative Court had ordered the suspension of the construction work on the upper part of the square, exactly where the foundations of an ancient building, a cannon, and several cannon balls were found. However, photographs published by citizens today show that the construction has not only not stopped, but is currently pouring concrete on those very foundations.
Citizens, civil society activists, and archeologists, who called the verdict of the Administrative Court a “victory,” are protesting today against Durrës Mayor Vangjush Dako.
